Nostalgia on steroids.
For a number of reasons, I try not to wax poetic about “the good ol’ days.” But there’s no doubt that the holidays hit different when you’re a kid. Here are some powerful reminders of just how long ago that was for some of us…
From the AdLand archives
I went looking for the Hershey’s “Holiday Bells” commercial because it’s like watching “It’s a Wonderful Life.” It’s seasonal required viewing. In doing so, I discovered that this iconic commercial is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Those are some seriously old kisses.

The new stuff
You know what else is turning 35 this holiday season? Kevin McCallister and all of his violent hijinks. Disney+ is pulling out all the stops, including a 25-foot-tall gingerbread house.
Beyond 35th anniversaries, I’ve noticed another trend this year: brands marketing themselves based on what things are not, rather than what they are. In this case, O2 is assuring loyal members that it has better gifts for them than the old standard pair of socks.
Meanwhile, Zales is decking the halls with its “Not Another Candle” Collection. Am I the only person who actually likes getting socks and scented candles as gifts?
